Art has always been a part of me. I became a Christian in my teens and made a conscious decision to use art as a spiritual expression and began painting regularly. When my mom gave me the gift of a park district painting class when I had my first baby, I fell in love with watercolor. My instructor, Bea Giordano was amazing. As a young mother I treasured the time to paint just for me. When my children were in high school I finished a Bible College degree and started classes toward an art degree. Mary Cutts at NEIU mentored me and I will always be grateful to her. At the great age of 44 I finished a bachelors degree with double majors of art and secondary education. Did that make me an artist? No, because I was an artist, but it helped me learn techniques, color theory and gain the respect an education gives. I taught multimedia and design at a fabulous high school and loved most minutes of my time there, but longed to paint. Currently my husband and I are traveling and I am painting again.
Over the past several years my paintings have taken me on a journey. Each painting expresses an aspect of this journey. Through my paintings I explore my life. My family, friends and faith come up again and again. My most recent paintings represent prayer and pray-ers. Bikers and their machines interest me so they are celebrated in a series. Another series starts with the notion that birth is the beginning of death and death is the beginning of real life. The life lived between birth and death is filled with some wonderful and some tragic experiences. I realized my life is not unique in that I alone rejoice or suffer. My paintings are meant to communicate between the viewer and artist, a mutual understanding of what it feels like to be human.
My paintings are a variety of watercolor and acrylic paint. Many of my images are abstractions from reality. Although some are shapes made in a very thoughtful manner. The actual shapes are not the important image, but the emotion behind the shapes; the color and the texture relate the feeling of my paintings.
During our travels we took the Lincoln Highway. I was intrigued by the aging motels and roadside attractions forgotten in the interstate age. My next series will include some of those images and emotions.
